The DJs who I have learned the most from are probably my friend (and mentor) DJ Renton of WSUM in Madison, John Richards of KEXP, and John Peel (RIP) of the BBC. John was a champion of music that mattered to him, not what he thought was going to be popular. Although, what he liked ended up, more often than not, being popular. He was an early champion of The Fall, Joy Division, The White Stripes, and many many more bands. Clive Selwood and John Peel formed Strange Fruit Records in 1986 to release material from the BBC, notably Peel Sessions (hosted by, you guessed it, John Peel). When I was younger, and I saw a record that said "Peel Sessions" on it, I'd pick it up, even if I didn't know the artist, because I knew that it was going to be something different, something interesting, something good. Thank you, John Peel, for being a champion of music and for sharing it with us all.
