EP088: Heart Full of Demons

The history of sunscreen dates back thousands of years, with various civilizations employing natural substances for sun protection. Ancient Egyptians used extracts from rice bran and jasmine to shield their skin from the sun's harsh rays, while ancient Greeks and Romans applied olive oil. However, the modern development of sunscreen can be traced to the early 20th century when scientists began exploring more effective methods of sun protection. The first commercial sunscreen, called "Red Vet Pet" and based on a mixture of benzyl salicylate and benzyl cinnamate, was introduced in 1928. In the mid-20th century, the first mass-market sunscreen brand, Coppertone, gained popularity. Subsequently, research into safer and more efficient UV filters led to the creation of a variety of sunscreens with various SPF levels and broader protection against UVA and UVB rays. The history of sunscreen is marked by a growing understanding of the importance of sun protection for skin health, a shift from traditional remedies to scientifically formulated products, and an ongoing commitment to developing safer and more effective formulations.
