EP096: Computers Delete Us

Insect cannibalism is a widespread and intriguing phenomenon observed across various insect species, serving as a survival strategy, a means of population control, or even a reproductive tactic. Many insects, driven by competition for resources or triggered by environmental stress, resort to consuming members of their own species. This behavior can occur at various life stages, from larvae to adults. In some cases, it serves as a method for eliminating rivals for limited resources, while in others, it aids in regulating population density. Additionally, certain species of insects engage in cannibalistic behaviors to obtain vital nutrients, especially during times of scarcity. While seemingly counterintuitive, insect cannibalism underscores the complex and adaptive strategies these creatures employ for survival in diverse ecological niches.
