Nickel Boys is based on a novel (which is based on a true story) that follows two African-American boys who form a close friendship while enduring the the horrors of a reform school in Florida. Director RaMell Ross sits down with Erin to discuss how he was able to conceptualize big concepts from the book into a film through tone and an incredible soundtrack, why it took four years of research to collect the archival footage, and casting Bay Area favorites Daveed Diggs and Jimmie Fails.
