Welcome to Slamdance 2025! In honor of Slamdance's first time being held in LA, we're kicking things off with two documentaries that are LA as fuuuck.
Coroner to the Stars chronicles the life and career of Dr. Thomas Noguchi, head medical examiner and coroner from the late 60s-early 80s in Los Angeles. Director Ben Hethcoat shares the ten year journey it took to get this film made, how growing up as the son of a coroner helped him prepare for this film, and why Dr. Noguchi's career created a perfect storm in Hollywood that would never take place in today's digital age.
40 Watts From Nowhere shares the story of Sue Carpenter, a young woman who hated commercial radio and decided to create her own pirate radio station out of her apartment in Silverlake, Los Angeles, in the 90s. We were excited to be joined by Sue (who also directed the film), to discuss how she found archival footage she never knew existed, her love for motorcycles, and the magic and innocence in not knowing what the fuck you're doing.
