Between Mountains and Asgeir 

Woke up early to go to the pool, and realized that one of the off-venue shows I was interested in was very near there. So, packed up swimsuit and camera and was only slightly (pleasantly) surprised when I came upon Grund, Dvalar- og hjúkrunarheimili, a senior complex near the Ring Road. The audience was a mix of seniors, pre-K, and the regular concert attendees of 20s, 30s, and 40-somethings. First up was Between Mountains a duo of harmonizing female voices that played piano, guitar, and at one point accordion. Gorgeous Icelandic-language songs that wouldn't have felt out of place in the chapel, which was where the performance took place.

Next up was Icelandic torch singer, Asgeir. He's been touring internationally over the last three years and for this lowkey performance sat with his guitar and his father at his side. A local had mentioned to me that his father had written the Icelandic lyrics to his record topping debut (released on Sena, sung in his native Icelandic). Throughout the performance, Asgeir would play a song and then his father would read a poem, while he strummed his guitar. It was so lovely and having an opportunity to see performances like these, that illustrates how music is woven into the fabric of Icelandic culture is one of the best reasons to keep returning to Airwaves. Stellar! Would see again.
