Like you, I’m listening. Constantly. To the radio. To records. To other people’s conversations, to dogs licking pastries off the sidewalk. And, like you, I do this while moving through a busy world and attempting life’s daily multitasking (if such a thing is possible). But, after two and a half years as a DJ with BFF.fm, I finally got the chance to facilitate a space for people to slow down and listen more deeply to new local music during our Listening Parties.
These intimate evening gatherings feature Bay Area artists sharing songs live in and conversation with our DJs. Thanks to them, not only did I get to listen more closely to the music, I got to hear from all of our collaborators in the process: the artists, DJs at the station, videographers and record label founders right here in the Bay Area. This sort of deep listening and growth can only happen IRL and with your support!
Coming together in person has never been more important for building community. While the digital world sparks so many connections, the ability to meet face-to-face keeps the fire burning and fuels our passion across the board.
At our Sylvester Listening Party in November, Josh Cheon of Dark Entries Records and Jeanie Tracy, an Oakland-based diva who performed with Sylvester in his heyday, came together for the first time after years of correspondence. The grounding effect this has for our community and the way it solidifies our musical continuum is palpable and can’t be understated. It also can’t be facilitated without your support. Moments like this continue to inspire my connection to radio and to BFF.fm and remind me how having a physical space that echoes what we do on the airwaves is essential!

As the year draws to a close, please consider supporting BFF.fm with one final donation to help us cover our operating costs, which includes our Listening Parties. We’re only $2000 from our overall end of year goal, and after that we’re able to use your donations to expand our support for projects like our Listening Parties and continue to anchor the music community IRL in 2024!
