An operatic warcry leaps from vocalist Castle's lungs as a snappy snare launches the listener into the chant-like verses of Pleeay's new single "NO".
"Everyone gets fed up, everyone gets angry. Most of the time, we’re told to hold it in and get over it," vocalist Castle explains. "This song is about standing up for yourself, knowing what your needs are, and prioritizing them. In most situations that starts with two letters: N. O."
Instrumentalists Huli and Pete's arpeggiating synths and bashing drums form the framework behind a stream-of-consciousness-like reminder that it's not only possible to set boundaries, but that it's often essential to carry on existing.
“It’s a treatise on bodily autonomy," says Huli. "Come at me like that and you're gonna get sliced up!"
As the song carries this powerful lyrical message, instrumentally it's simultaneously trippy and punk, so it introduces the power of saying "No" as both a mind-blowing concept and radicalizes the listener just a few beats later.
Pete explains that the song structure matches the narrative: "It’s about boundaries and protecting your energy. We all stop playing at the same time throughout the song. That’s our way of saying 'no' to things that don't serve us. It also just feels good.”
“NO” is the first single from San Francisco-based PLEEAY’s upcoming EP “Wealth and Hellness Vol.1,” part one of a 3-EP project that picks apart and moves through the challenges of being human. Listen to "NO" below and practice saying "No" in your everyday life.
