On episode #63 of WTFIFL (Whatever The Fuck I Feel Like), DJ ShortyRock is joined by local band Agness Twin's vocalist Elisa Ovrahim to discuss their 2023 self-released EP Turn to Gold. The episode is full of incredible detail regarding the EP's production, the band's history, and how Elisa has taken to returning to music after a decade-long hiatus. The episode is full of great content and nostalgic 90s-style alternative songs that set the tone throughout the interview. Give it a listen here!

Agness Twin started in the 1990s in San Francisco, partaking in a significant underground alternative movement in the city. The band's hiatus, which is discussed more thoroughly in the radio interview, took place when Elisa decided to focus her attention and time on her career and family. Over a decade later, the band has re-emerged on the scene, playing shows with other local post-punk adjacent bands such as Mind Without a Face and Silent Pictures. Their ongoing contribution to the scene is an important nod to the local music scene's staying power, despite shifts in the economic and socio-political landscape over the last few decades.

As a band, Agness Twin can be described as a gothic post-punk band, with playfully incorporated elements of shoegaze and folk. On the 2023 EP, Turn Into Gold, Bauhaus and Love and Rockets's David J and multidisciplinary artist and pianist Vinsantos collaborate with Elisa Ovrahim to produce the impressively haunted sonic layers accomplished on the record. Additionally, the EP includes Donny Newenhouse on drums & bass, Drew Pluta on bass, and Tom Mackerness on strings and upright bass. Elisa began writing songs on the EP prior to her music hiatus, making Turn to Gold a long-awaited release and full circle moment for the band.

For WTFIFL's episode #63, Elisa Ovrahim curated a list of songs featuring local and non-local bands that she appreciates. The list, which can be listened to in completion on the episode recording, includes local bands Seablite, Vinsantos, Rhymies, Silent Pictures, and of course Agness Twin. Between plays, DJ ShortyRock and Elisa discuss the reasons for her choices and the details of her connection to each local artist. The playlist also includes influential bands like The Heart Throbs, which Elisa notes as important bands that shaped her relationship with music early on. She also mentions a Portland band, Death Doula, who she states she would like to coordinate future shows with.

In the interview with DJ ShortyRock, Elisa shares about the self-published EP "Turn to Gold", which came out in 2023. Despite a long-term writing pause, Elisa and the band sound as good as ever and have made a killer EP. If you haven't already listened to it, you can listen here. The band is looking to book shows in 2025 and can be contacted here for requests.

Agness Twin will be playing a free show on May 3rd for Bang the Bay's Solar Van Saturday at Rocky's Beach in Berkeley, CA. More info here.
