Let’s get LOCAL! Bay Area indie darlings Galore are set to light up our summer with their second album, Dirt, on July 25th via San Francisco’s own Speakeasy Studios.

Infusing jangly pop with nostalgic harmonies and raucous punk, Galore captures the essence of the Bay Area’s chaotic, communal music scene. Dirt, with alternating rock and twangy currents, feels like a trip down memory lane and a road trip with your best friends.

No track celebrates the sunny promise of summer quite like “Field Trip”. The opening song of Dirt is a wandering romp through the Russian River, exploring the increasingly rare feeling of truly free time and unplanned escapades with friends. It’s a timeless, joyful expression of what summer should be: off-grid adventures, genuine time together, and childhood nostalgia.

As the countdown to Dirt continues (6 weeks to go!), Galore shared their thoughts on the Bay Area music scene, how they’re growing as a band, and their best band recs.

Introduce yourself and your band!

Hi! We are Galore. We are a band from San Francisco. We write pop music for rock’n'rollers.

What was the writing process like for Dirt? How did it compare to your previous albums?

Dirt is different from 2022’s Blush and our 2020 self-titled full-length debut, Galore. Those first two records are explorations. We were experimenting with sound, switching up authors verse to verse, and having a good time in the process. Galore was more like, “hey, look, we have these ten songs. They’re fun.”

For our first record, Rocks In Your Head asked us to do a record and we said "what the hell”. With Dirt, our process was still a lot of jamming, experimenting and workshopping things as a group. But it's a much more driven record. We had a shared vision of doing this LP. It wasn’t by invitation — it’s a statement. And that lends the record a pretty distinct, unified sound.

How does being in SF and Oakland influence your writing?

The Bay is hectic. Many of our songs reflect that. A lot of Dirt echoes the chaos of life in cities squeezed tight by industry and the moments of finding peace. Our songs are about growing up in that environment — growing through the pains of love; through daily absurdities that remind you there’s a bigger picture; through maintaining values in an amoral world.

How has the music scene changed over the last few years?

Right now, the Bay is a powerhouse for all kinds of music. If we're talking about the pretty small indie rock scene, it’s definitely maintained — people are still playing guitars, keys, synths, and every year about a dozen hit pop songs come out. A lot of us are playing the kinds of music we love as opposed to what the world tells us we should play, and people here will go to every show and support every new band.

But sometimes, the music scene feels stuck in time. There’s a certain insularity that comes with it — maybe the result of so many artists being pushed out of the Bay. And of course, COVID did a number on people. But things might be changing. Right now, whether it's pop, punk, indie, rap, whatever, it feels like music here is rounding a bend. Bay Area artists seem determined to be on the map. They’re tired of the same old same old.

What are you hoping to see in the scene moving forward?

We’re hoping to see more, more, more! More people messing around and jamming together, more people challenging themselves and each other! More people shaking things up.

What local bands should we be listening to?

Abracadabra, Josiah Flores, Remedy and Wren, Wifey, Al Harper, Asha Wells, Manos de Fierro, July. Jordan Pantalone will hopefully have some recordings out soon too!
