Each week, as I construct my playlist for Radioculars, I troll a heap of music blogs, and listen to hours of music on Soundcloud and Bandcamp. But rarely have I been so instantly smitten by an unknown band's single unexplained track. When I first heard American Wrestlers' I Can Do No Wrong, it threw me into a musical existential crisis of sorts. Who is this band? Where did this music come from? How does it totally hit the spot for me? What? When? Why!?
Since that moment I've been hungrily following a trail of morsels tossed out by the big music blogs or picked up from the band's own social media, to cobble together a bio: the album was self-recorded on 8 track cassette by a Scottish songwriter who lives in Missouri after having possibly eloped there with a British woman. They played a gig near my hometown and I begged friends to go check it out simply to report back with more info to no avail.
I pre-ordered the I Can Do No Wrong 7" just to hear the b side, I've been clamoring for more so much. And now, at last, another glimpse of what we can expect from the American Wrestlers debut: Kelly- a song about Kelly Thomas, a mentally-ill homeless man who was beaten to death by police in Orange County in 2011. (according to The Fader) Have a listen:
Full LP American Wrestlers is out on 4/7/15 on Fat Possum. Or you can grab the I Can Do No Wrong 7" now!
I founded BFF.fm in 2013 because I believe in the power of community radio to play an integral role in our local music scene, and that a great Internet station can bring the Bay Area sound to the world.
People look at me sideways when I explain that one day I just decided to start an online radio station. I knew I could figure it out, and today BFF.fm is a vibrant community of talented DJs and dedicated volunteers, working together to make our mission happen!
I’m proud of the impact BFF.fm has had on the community and the opportunities it has afforded our listeners and our DJs. In 4 years we’ve hosted hundreds of bands in studio, presented dozens of local music showcases, and booked local support for touring acts playing larger venues.
