Steve Foxx is a powerhouse at BFF.fm, and Wake The F Up! is a show built for the rebels and the defiant. With its intensely unique sci-fi aesthetic and sharp political edge, it’s a rallying cry wrapped in rock and rebellion. Steve's show is truly a much-needed one in today's age, balancing anthems of resistance with an energy that’s both uplifting and empowering, making every Saturday broadcast one to look forward to.

Q: Did you have the format in mind back when you first started the show?
I had a general idea of what I wanted to rant about, and I was very much into thinking about how I could tell a story that was particular to what was going on in the country every week, just by the way I organized the playlist for that week’s show.
Q: Did you ever think about playing around with the format, or did you stick with it for the most?
I'm committed now, you know, committed to the bit until we get where we need to be in the country. And, you know, I do that by weaving stories through rock music, and it's phenomenal.
Q: How did you craft your DJ identity? Is that something that you consider different from yourself, off air and on air?
Steve Fox is someone who was born in 1993 and I was working at a radio station, and my prime director at the time dubbed me Steve Fox, and I just kind of ran with it. Steve Fox is a character that's for sure, and he and the guy outside of the radio station share, certainly, some similarities. I think Steve Fox is probably a little more over sized than the guy who leaves the radio station.
Q: Did you always want to do it from the perspective of politics?
If I could stop talking about politics… Not even politics, because it's not even politics anymore. If I could stop talking about survival, boy, I'd love to get back to just talking about partying. But we have to talk about it. We have a moral obligation.
Q: What goes into making a playlist for the week, like you said?
Most of the time, my playlist is an evolving thing, where a lot of times I'll get off the air at eight o'clock on Saturday morning, and by the time I get home and have a little bit of breakfast. I'm already starting to think about next week's playlist, something will come up in my feed, or I'll hear a piece of music that I haven’t done in a while. And that just starts my process of going through and searching.
Q: What feeling do you want to leave the listener with, at the end of your show?
I want people to wake up, get inspired, get them to think and still understand that there's a lot of celebration and joy every week. And to do that while we're still fighting for what's right.
If you could say something to a volunteer who's considering joining BFF, what would you say?
Joining BFF.fm, as a volunteer, is a door opening into a wider community of creatives, artists, poets, technicians, who are all here to make San Francisco a tighter place. And that’s totally worth it.

Big fan of hikes, playing the ukelele and any media that features the authentic wholesome chaos of the early internet. Take a guess how I found myself here!
