San Francisco’s own queer emo pop band gloomy june make pop punk bangers that make empty rooms burst with emotion and transform crowds into friends. Their energetic sound melds synth pop and punk for danceable jams that hit the perfect emotional chord for dancing, crying, or both.
Tomorrow reveals gloomy june’s biggest milestone yet: their debut full-length. The self-titled album builds on the addictive vulnerability that the band has long perfected with 12 bittersweet anthems about finding yourself, confronting anxiety, and the messy, beautiful process of figuring sh*t out.
Gloomy june (the album) is the culmination of teamwork between singer Alexi Belchere, guitarist, synth composer, and backing vocalist Devin Nelson, bassist and synth producer Jack Sundquist, and drummer Ash Hyatt. Years of effort – in addition to the band’s seemingly endless live appearances – burst into shape with earnest-but-wise fervor. From the album’s opening notes, you’re ready to sing along in shared catharsis. The framework is the pop punk that lives rent-free in most of our heads, especially millennials. But gloomy june make this familiar sound their own with wry, intensely thoughtful lyrics that wink at our inner teenager with the wisdom (and confusion) that can only come from growing up and finding the courage to be yourself.
Alexi shared how gloomy june’s lyrics came to be:
“Writing the lyrics for the LP involved a lot of vulnerability for me. I would try to delve beneath any metaphor I wrote down and expressed my fears and anxieties. For example, the opening song ‘Escaping With You’ has the line ‘Blisters on my blisters on heart left out in the sun too long’ followed by ‘You're sad that you ain’t got love / I'm scared I'll never be enough’.
There are a lot of moments on the album where I try to open up, because life's too short to hide who you are and what you feel, especially from yourself, and especially in such uncertain times.”
Whether heard dance-crying alone in your apartment or in a crowd of your new besties, gloomy june is the emo pop punk band your heart has been waiting for. Listen at full volume and learn the lyrics ASAP, because you won’t be able to resist singing along.
