Bud Powell was one of the foremost composers of the 20th Century and a key formulator of what became known as bebop. At age 20 he was brutally beaten by Philadelphia police, and for his remaining 21 years suffered from illness and addiction. "Paris Thoroughfare" is played in his honor.
